soft switch

A softswitch, also known as a mediagatewaycontroller( MGC), is a network component that supports different signaling simultaneously. This network component of Next Generation Networks( NGN) exchanges signaling information with the Signaling Gateways( SGW), controls the Media Gateways( MGW) and handles resource management.

A softswitch gateway establishes voice connections between different network technologies and performs voice conversion, for example, from VoIP and video-over- IP from IP networks to the telephone network.

The term softswitch refers to the software that allows centralized control of the switches. The software resides on fault-tolerant servers and handles connection control. This includes protocol conversion, authorization, management and billing functions. These functions support voice call routing and resource and bandwidth management. It also manages system access functions such as Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting( AAA) and provides the Media Gateway Controller (MGC).

Unlike a Class 5 switch, a softswitch is not involved in data transport, switching, or packetization.
