small molecule OLED (SMOLED)

Two different material technologies are being pursued in the development of Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED):

One works with very small molecules and is called Small Molecules OLED (SMOLED), the other uses polymers. The advantage of the former technology lies in its higher efficiency and luminous efficacy, while that of polymers lies in their simpler and cheaper production. Thus, polymer OLEDs in printed electronics can be printed on foil using printing machines, whereas SMOLED technology requires a vacuum in which the small molecules are evaporated.
