small form-factor pluggable (SFP)

SFP+Interface Modules(Small Form-Factor Pluggable) are miniaturized Gigabit Interface Converter( GBIC), Mini-GBIC. They are small, compact transceiver modules with dimensions of 8.5 x 13.4 x 56.5 mm that are used as pluggable input/output modules in switches and routers of Gigabit Ethernet and in Optical Network Units( ONU) of GPONs.

SFP modules form the physical interface between the transmission medium and Gigabit Ethernet. SPF modules are available for various optical fibers and the wavelengths specified in the optical windows. In addition, the SPF modules are also available for TP cables and thus for all common GbE interfaces such as 1000Base- SX, 1000Base-LX,1000Base-ZX and 1000Base-T. They can be plugged in and unplugged during operation, so they are hot-swappable.

The SFP modules can be used to bridge distances of up to 100 m in conjunction with TP cables, up to 5 km with multimode fibers and up to 70 km with single- mode fibers. When using a DSF fiber, the maximum distance is 100 km.

For 10 Gigabit Ethernet, the corresponding interface modules are called XFP module (10 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable) and SFP+ module, and for 100 Gigabit Ethernet, CFP module (100 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable).
