Sensor networks are used wherever data is acquired and transmitted by sensors. Sensor networks are used to transmit the various physical variables detected by sensors, such as temperature or air pressure, torque or brightness, pressure, acceleration or vibration for the control of actuators.

The main difference of sensor networks compared to local area networks( LAN), WLANs and mobile networks is that the sensor and actuator data are relatively small amounts of data. This data can be transmitted wireline or wirelessly, with transport protocols optimized for small amounts of data. Therefore, a distinction is made between wired and wireless sensor networks, the Wireless Sensor Networks(WSN).

Wireless Sensor Networks are easy to install, they are self-configuring and belong to the Self Organized Networks( SON), they are maintenance-free, interference radiation resistant, battery powered and characterized by extremely low power consumption. Battery-powered Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks(WSAN) can be operated for several years without battery replacement.
