Sensor-actuator networks are used wherever sensors and actuators communicate with each other. This can be in automation, medicine, building automation and automotive technology, to name just a few areas.
Sensor-actuator networks operate at the field level and connect sensors and actuators to each other. The interconnection can be wired via a field bus or wireless. Wired networking has its limitations in places that are difficult to access, and other limitations include inflexibility, difficulty of installation, and susceptibility to interference. Thanks to the tremendous progress in wireless communication technology, sensor-actuator networks can also be built with wireless microsystems.
Well-known wire-bound sensor-actuator networks are the Actuator Sensor Interface( AS-i), the LIN bus or the TTP/A bus. For wireless communicationWLANs, Bluetooth, ZigBee and proprietary radio technologies are available.
