segment switching

Segment switching is a method of increasing the data throughput of a network of several small network segments.

The segments concerned are not connected to each other by a bridge or a router, but by powerful segment switches or LAN switches that are able to handle several communication relationships between the individual segments simultaneously. This can significantly increase the theoretically available intersegment bandwidth.

Segment switching is a cost-effective way of increasing the data throughput between several LAN segments, but it does not eliminate the disadvantage that no critical real-time applications can be transmitted.
