secure hardware extension (SHE)

Secure HardwareExtension (SHE) is a security concept for automotive technology specified by the Manufacturer Initiative Software(HIS). The SHE module is functionally comparable to the hardware security module( HSM) and protects the cryptographic keys against attacks.

The SHE extension provides an authentic software environment where security depends solely on the strength of the encryption method and the confidentiality of the key.

Security in motor vehicles refers to communication between two or more vehicles, car-to-car communication( C2C) and car-to- infrastructure communication( C2I). This involves authentication, communication security and secure data storage. Furthermore, the SHE modules secure the motor vehicle against theft and prevent unauthorized use. The module can intervene in all functional areas of the motor vehicle, be it temperature control, the battery management system, the on- board computer, the instrument clusters or the assistance systems and media platforms.
