The riser is an installation segment for connecting the building distribution board(BDSD) with the floor distribution boards(FDSD). In the case of a fiber optic riser, it is the fiber optic building distributor(GF-GV) and a fiber optic floor distributor, which also works as a fiber optic collection pubnct. In the cabling standard, this secondary section is specified with a maximum length of 500 meters.

The risers are laid in an empty shaft that connects the individual floors of a building with each other.
