Reverse engineering means reverse development and refers to the process of analyzing an existing system and successively rebuilding the original system as a 1-1 copy by examining the individual components and structures.

Based on the analysis and knowledge of the overall system, reverse engineering makes it possible to further develop the product.

The term reverse engineering is used in various contexts, e.g. in the field of computer software to recover a source code or to identify and correct faulty software documentation, but also to rebuild software or IT systems without authorization, in violation of patent rights.
