residual error rate (RER)

According to the ISO definition, the intrinsic or residual error rate is the remaining error rate that exists even when all error correction options have been exhausted. The residual error rate is the ratio of the erroneously received bits, step elements, characters or data blocks that were not detected or corrected by the error protection unit to the total number of bits, step elements, characters or blocks sent.
