remote job entry (RJE)

Remote Job Entry (RJE) is an application-based service from the 1960s through which remote computer users could send data for batch processing to a central computer, usually a mainframe.

Jobs were entered through terminals that had access to the central computer through a transmission section. Before screen terminals were used, job entry was done manually using punch cards and typewriters.

With Remote Job Entry (RJE), a protocol developed by IBM and specified in the early 1970s, data generated on site was transmitted to the central data processing system, processed there, and the results then transmitted back. This form of data transfer is also known as batch processing or batch operation.

In some networks, Remote Job Entry (RJE) has been replaced by the Network Job Entry( NJE) extension.
