relay station (RS)
The English word relay stands for to pass on and to transmit and underlines the function of relay stations as intermediate or switching stations in radio transmission. In relay radio, a relay station receives a radio signal, amplifies it and transmits the same signal on the same or a different frequency.
A relay station is the name given to a wide variety of radio equipment. They can be radio stations that act as frequency converters, provide radio links in directional radio, raise the field strength in a particular area, bypass topographical obstructions such as hills, or are used to increase the radio propagation of radio cells.
In professional radio, relay stations are used to extend the range. The company radio transmits its signal on a certain frequency to the relay station, which amplifies the modulated signal and retransmits it on another frequency.
The relay station should be installed on a hill or a higher building. Such relay stations are set up by rescue services, the police or fire department, so that the emergency services can be reached everywhere in the city or in larger counties.
