- In general, the term register is used commercially for tables of contents, lists, factual divisions for documents and information.
- In memory technology, registers are memory units with extremely short access times for the intermediate storage of small amounts of data, data words, commands or addresses, hence the terms data register, command register and address register. Registers are used to accelerate computing operations and are directly connected to or integrated in the central processing unit( CPU). Depending on the application, the intermediate results of the arithmetic unit are stored in registers, instructions for the control unit are stored in the instruction register or the addresses for the memories are stored in the address register.
