recovery point objective (storage) (RPO)

The Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is the restart time after a failure of an IT system or the IT infrastructure. It is directly related to the Recovery Time Objective( RTO), the restart time.

The RPO value indicates the period of time in which data may be lost and depends on the sources from which the transaction data can be obtained. If backups are directly retrievable for recovery, the period is relatively short. However, it becomes longer if there are media breaks in the backups and the data is available on different media. The recovered data is always only as up-to-date as the last backup.

If the backups are created only every 24 hours, then the Recovery Point Objective is 24 hours. Data that has changed during this period can then be lost. For this reason, Continuous Data Protection( CDP) offers itself as an alternative for data updates.
