radio resource control (UMTS) (RRC)

The Radio Resource Control Protocol (RRC) is a protocol for controlling radio resources in UMTS. RRC is located at the third layer and provides signaling between the subscriber equipment( UE) and UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network( UTRAN).

The functions of the RRC protocol include connection establishment and termination, as well as operation and control of the connection between the aforementioned components. To support a required quality of service( QoS), multiple radio links to a subscriber device can be established simultaneously. In addition, the RRC protocol provides paging, broadcast and messaging between UTRAN and subscriber device, transmission power control and encryption.
