radio frequency for consumer electronics (RF4CE)

ZigBee Radio Frequency for Consumer Electronics (RF4CE) is a ZigBee 3.0 standard that supports three ZigBee profiles. The best known of these profiles is ZigBee Remote Control (ZRC), which is used in radio remote controls of consumer electronics devices. The other two profiles are ZigBee Interface Device

(ZID) and ZigBee 3D Synch (Z3S). ZigBee RF4CE can be used to remotely control televisions, radios, CD-ROM drives, set-top boxes and other entertainment devices, as well as garage doors or keyless systems

.The RF4CE specifications enhance the features of IEEE 802.15.4 by providing a network layer and an application layer on which interoperable home electronics applications can be implemented. In accordance with 802.15.4, RF4CE operates in the ISM band at 2.4 GHz, and applications can flexibly use three frequency channels. RF4CE can establish multiple star topologies over Personal Area Networks (PAN), it operates in power saving modes, supports different connection types such as unicast or broadcast and works with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 128 bit

. RF4CE offers itself as an interesting alternative to infrared remote controls, as it does not require line-of-sight, bridges longer distances and supports multiple connection types.
