protocol identifier (PID)

The Protocol Identifier(PID) is one part of the Uniform Resource Locator( URL), another part is the Resource Name.

The Protocol Identifier identifies the specific protocol used to search for the resource. For http, the Protocol Identifier is the Hypertext Transfer Protocol( HTTP), which is typically used to locate hypertext documents. Other protocol identifiers include news for news, telnet for virtual terminal, and ftp for File Transfer Protocol.
