projector lamp

Most projectors generate their projected image with a projector lamp. In addition to light, these lamps also generate heat, which is dissipated by fans. Projector lamps determine the color representation, its naturalness and color fidelity. Lamps that come closest to the color temperature of daylight, namely 6,500 Kelvin (K), are characterized by natural color rendering. This value is achieved by HID lamps, while others are at 7,000 K to 8,000 K or 2,700 K to 3,200 K for artificial light.

In addition to the aforementioned xenon arc lamp, there is also the mercury arc lamp and the metal halide lamp, which, like many others, uses tungsten electrodes and is filled with inert gas. This is used for ignition. There are also halogen lamps and HID lamps, as well as the UHP lamp developed by Philips, the VIP lamp from Osram and the UHE lamp from Panasonic.

In addition to color temperature, important characteristics of projector lamps include power consumption, luminous flux generated and, last but not least, lamp service life.

The UHE lamp, VIP lamp and UHP lamp, Ultra High Pressure (UHP), is a short-arc lamp which, due to a small electrode gap, produces a point-shaped light source with high brightness. As a result, a lot of light enters the projector optics and the illumination becomes relatively uniform. Another advantage of the UHP lamp over metal halide lamps is that the brightness and color temperature remain relatively constant over the life of the lamp.

UHE lamps and UHP lamps have an output of up to 300 W and a maximum luminous flux of 5,000 lumens. This means that less cooling is required and thus fan noise is lower. The service life of the above projector lamps is given as up to 10,000 operating hours.
