non-program associated data (DAB) (NPAD)

In digital audio broadcasting( DAB), program-accompanying data ( PAD) and non-program-accompanying data (NPAD) are transmitted in addition to the audio data.

The non-program-accompanying data is transmitted in a separate subchannel and can be shown on the displays of the receiving equipment. They have no direct reference to the broadcasts.

The NPAD data can be traffic information, information services, advertising inserts and the like. The NPAD transmission has a transmission rate of 8 kbit/s per channel in the Main Service Channel( MSC) for a packet transmission and can be increased to a maximum of 1.2 Mbit/s. Currently, 64 kbit/s is available.

In digital audio broadcast, several data services are defined for this purpose: the Multimedia Object Transfer Protocol( MOT), radio text in the Dynamic Label Service( DLS), traffic information in the Traffic Message Channel( TMC) and" IP over DAB" for the transmission of IP-based services.
