- A prefix is a prefix introduced to a base word, such as the "be" of edit. In engineering, the prefix is used to summarize powers of ten or exponentiated dual numbers and prefixed to the dimension, such as the "k" for kilohertz( kHz) or the "M" for megabyte( MB). The symbols and names of prefixes were standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission ( IEC) in 1998 as IEC standards and adopted by NIST as the International System for Units( SI), the system of units.
