power line carrier (energy networks) (PLC)

Power Line Carrier (PLC) is a technology that uses high- voltage lines as a transmission medium for the transfer of meter readings.

High-voltage lines lend themselves to the transmission of metering data because of their robustness. Using these lines and existing energy transmission network infrastructure, utilities can perform automatic meter reading of consumption data, retrieve data readings for consumption data at metering points, transmit security data, and also conduct voice communications. The transmission technology can be integrated into a wide variety of communication networks, such as IP networks. The communication in the power line carrier technology is based on voice or tones of different frequency. Data of telemetry, telecontrol, fast data applications and line protection can be transmitted over it.

Based on Power Line Carrier technology, various companies have developed communication solutions. One example is PowerLink IP from Siemens.
