power line carrier (PLC)

Power LineCarrier (PLC) is a technology that uses high voltage lines as a transmission medium

for the transmission of meter readings. High-voltage lines lend themselves to the transmission of metering data because of their robustness. Using these lines and the existing infrastructure of power transmission networks, utilities can perform automatic meter reading of consumption data, retrieve data readings for consumption data at metering points, transmit security data and also conduct voice communication. The transmission technology can be integrated into a wide variety of communication networks, such as IP networks. The communication in the Power Line Carrier technology is based on voice or tones of different frequencies. It can be used to transmit telemetry data, telecontrol

data, fast data applications and line protection. Based on Power Line Carrier technology, various companies have developed communication solutions.

One example is PowerLink IP from Siemens.
