position dilution of precision (GPS) (PDOP)

Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP) is a dimensionless value that indicates the position accuracy insatellite navigation. This depends directly on the satellite positions in space and on the position of the satellites relative to each other.

PDOP as a function of satellite position

PDOP as a function of satellite position

If, for example, the angles of the individual satellites to the receiving position do not deviate significantly from each other, then the position accuracy is low; in contrast, it is very high if the satellite positions deviate significantly from each other. If the PDOP values and thus the percentage deviation are high, this means that the satellites are close to each other; if they are low, the accuracy is higher, indicating that the satellites are far apart.
