Portlets or servlets are programs that receive data for a portal from content management systems ( CMS), transform it, and then display it in a window, the portlet. As independent, loosely coupled components of a portal, portlets simplify the necessary adaptations and increase portal availability, since they do not affect other portal services in the event of failure.
