poly methyl metacrylate plastic optical fiber (PMMA-POF)

The PMMA POF is the most frequently used polymer fiber (POF). It is a further development of the classic polymer fiber, which is characterized by its broadband capability and can also be used for Gigabit Ethernet, among other things.

The PMMA POF has a step index profile, the core material is made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and surrounded by a cladding material with a lower refractive index. The core material is 980 µm in diameter, and the cladding material is 10 µm thin and made of fluorinated acrylate. The numerical aperture is 0.5, which means that light coupling into the plastic fiber can occur at a coupling angle of up to +/-30°. The PMMA material has a refractive index of 1.49. The PMMA POF fiber can be used in all optical windows and transmit data rates of 100 Mbit/s over distances of 100 m. The advantage of the PMMA-POF fiber is its robustness and ease of installation.

The PMMA-POF can be used in home networks, in automotive technology and also in the connection area for Fiber to the Home( FTTH).
