platform for privacy preferences project (W3C) (P3P)

The P3P protocol (Platform for Privacy Preferences Project) from the World Wide Web Consortium(W3C) meets the requirements for personalized Internet offerings and the demands for corresponding data protection. Personalized and user-oriented offers bear the risk that personal data subject to data protection will be misused for advertising purposes and user offers.

The P3P protocol reconciles the conflicting demands and provides users with privacy protection for their personal data when they visit websites. With P3P, websites can easily express their privacy policy according to a unified scheme. This is evaluated at the user and informs the surfer when websites request data, for example via a pop-up menu about the purpose, scope and duration of storage. In a similar way, it informs about cookies or other information that sites store. This makes it easier for users to decide whether they want to visit the site under the given conditions and which functions they use there.

Special P3P applications are designed to register what information one has given out and under what conditions, thus helping in the management of one's personal data.

With P3P as a universal technical standard, it is possible to make data protection policies transparent to users worldwide on the Internet. Users would thus have greater control over what happens to their personal data.
