In semiconductor technology and in the manufacture of chips, semiconductor memories, analog and digital components and circuits, the term planar manufacture or planar technology is often used. This refers to circuits with flat and planar design features. Planar circuits are two-dimensional and may consist of a silicon substrate. In contrast to planar construction, more compact semiconductor circuits are constructed in three dimensions. Examples of three-dimensional construction are 3D NAND memories.
