The ping-pong method - also known as time- disconnect method - consists of information frames being formed and sent alternately between two communication partners. The ping-pong method ensures that the second communication partner can be reached.
In the ping-pong procedure, one communication partner, a master or server, sends a ping to the slave or client. As soon as the latter has received the ping, it responds with the echo character Pong. After receiving the pong, the master sends the next character. The ping-pong procedure ensures that the master does not send another character until the slave has determined that there is no buffer overflow. The procedure slows down the data transmission due to the constant request and response.
The ping-pong procedure is used, among other things, on the UP0 interface ofISDN and offers advantages with serial interfaces.
