physical medium interface (PMI)

The Physical MediumInterface (PMI) is an interface of the Medium Access Control Sublayer and contains the specification of the physical medium (shielded, twisted copper wires, thin or thick coaxial cable, optical fiber) for the bit exchange between Medium Access Control Sublayer ( MAC) and Physical Layer. Furthermore, management functions (e.g. to prevent collisions and collision handling) of the medium access control sublayer are described.
