perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ)

Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) is the successor technology of Perceptual Speech Quality Measurement(PSQM) for objective evaluation of speech quality oftelephony. Another method is Perceptual Analysis Measurement System( PAMS).

PESQ is a method described in ITU-T Recommendation Q.862.1 that tests low-bit-rate speech codecs and is based on real-world conditions for end-to-end speech communications. In PESQ, a specified speech signal is injected at one end of a link and an objective evaluation of the output signal is performed at the other end using special calculation formulas. A psychoacoustic model is used to mathematically simulate the subjective perception. The result is an objective quality value, the so-called PESQ value, which can range from 4.5 to -0.5 and includes the MOS value. The highest value represents the best voice quality. For example, an excellent ISDN connection with a voice codec according to G.711 has a PESQ value of 4.4.

The PESQ method is also used for VoIP and takes into account, among other things, packet loss, delay times, jitter, noise and coding.

P.862.2 describes an extension of the narrowband frequency range from 3.4 kHz to 8 kHz for broadband telephony.
