passive matrix
In terms of display technologies, a distinction is made between active matrices and passive matrices.
While the former are self-illuminating, the latter are reflective liquid crystal displays in STN technology: Double Super Twisted Nematic( DSTN), Film Super Twisted Nematic( FSTN), Color Super Twisted Nematic ( CSTN).
The individual liquid crystal cells of the passive matrices are driven line by line, with the liquid cryst als aligning when a voltage is applied. When the voltage is turned off, the liquid crystals lose their alignment after a short time. This effect can be reduced by using inertliquid crystals. However, this has the disadvantage that a trailing effect appears when the image content changes quickly.
