parallel input/output (electronic unit) (PIO)

The parallel input/output (PIO), also called parallel port, provides parallel data transfer between computer or microcomputer and peripheral devices.

It is a parallel interface on whose data lines the data is transferred in parallel. The parallel port is controlled by the central processing unit by means of interrupts and can exchange data in one direction in unidirectional mode or in both directions in bidirectional mode. The data transfer can be bitwise or bytewise.

In contrast to serial transmission, parallel transmission accelerates the processing speed of the computing operations and increases the bandwidth.
