fast page mode (DRAM) (FPM)

The Fast Page Mode(FPM) method is an operating mode for fast page access in Dynamic RAMs( DRAM). In this method, which bypasses the technologically induced delay times, the information call is similar to that in a book. Here, after the page is called up in FPM mode, the desired information on this page is determined.

If further data is selected on the same page, the access time is halved, since the memory controller only has to address the column position. Since the column and row addresses are only transferred on the first call, the access times are reduced for all subsequent calls. Dynamic RAMs (DRAM) with Fast Page Mode DRAM (FPM-DRAM), operate with clock frequencies of 16 to 66 MHz, have 72 and 168 pins, a burst cycle of 5:3:3:3 and an access time of about 50 ns.

The FPM mode must be supported by the system and its chipset. The transition from FPM DRAM to the much faster Synchronous Dynamic RAM( SDRAM) took place in the mid-90s.
