page description language (PDL)

A page description language(PDL) is a programming language used to describe the contents of printed pages, as well as their pagination and layout.

Page description languages describe the arrangement of the elements of a page as geometric objects, as lines, circles, rectangles and texts, independent of the printer technology. This ensures that the appearance of the page is consistent for all printers.

All page printers use a page description language that composes the page to be printed from individual dots. Printer Command Language( PCL) from Hewlett Packard and Postscript from Adobe are well-known page description languages. However, some page description languages cannot be considered as programming languages because they do not meet certain requirements for such a language.
