The overtaking assistant is one of many driver assistance systems. This assistance system supports the driver by determining the relative speeds of the overtaking vehicle and the vehicle to be overtaken and comparing this speed difference with the speed of oncoming vehicles.

The overtaking assistant calculates the time available for an overtaking maneuver, taking into account the vehicle in front and oncoming traffic. The speed difference between the two overtaking vehicles and that of the oncoming traffic are decisive for the overtaking process to be completed before oncoming vehicles reach the overtaking vehicle. This is determined by the overtaking decision unit.
