out of band (remote service) (OOB)

Out-of-Band Management (OOB) is a remote maintenance concept used to manage network components and systems. The OOB concept has a dedicated connection between the management station and the system via which only the administrator has permanently available remote access.

The separate access channel can be a dedicated network connection used only for OOB management. With this technique, remote maintenance can be performed even if the operating system is not running or the personal computer has crashed. Out-of-band management requires a separate controller with its own firmware.

The out-of-band channel must always be available, even if the network is down or the network components and systems are powered off or in sleep mode. This allows the devices to be serviced remotely outside working hours. If remote maintenance takes place while the operating system is running, this is referred to as in-band management.
