optical density (OD)

Optical Density (OD), expressed in decibels( dB), corresponds to the perceptible attenuation or absorption oflight as it passes through an optical quadripole.

br> Optical density is formed from the logarithm of the power ratio of the output to the input power of an optical quadrupole. Accordingly, a power ratio of 100 corresponds to an optical density of 20 dB.

Since the optical density cannot be derived exclusively from absorption, but is also partly due to reflection, it is derived from the total optical power transfer.
