open source marketing

The marketing activities that aim to market open source applications and open source software

are called open source marketing. Unlike marketing activities for classic, commercial products, open source marketing involves the promotion of an idea by people with the same objective, such as the creation of a non-commercial browser like Firefox or software like Linux. Since open source marketing is not based on fixed marketing budgets of large companies, but is often financed by donations, the corresponding measures mainly relate to the use of social networks and include, for example, low-cost viral marketing.
