open software foundation (OSF)

The Open Software Foundation(OSF) is an association of international manufacturers for the research and development of vendor-independent interfaces, especially for open and portable software environments.

The goal is a single standardized Unix platform with programming interfaces and a uniform operating system, corresponding to X/Open.

The Open Systrem Foundation currently delivers the products OSF/1 MOTIF, Distributed Computing Environment( DCE) and Distributed Management Environment ( DME). The Open Software Foundation was founded by IBM, Apollo, Digital Equipment, Bull, Hewlett Packard and Siemens.

In 1996, the Open Software Foundation merged with X/Open to form The Open Group.
