on die termination (memory chip) (ODT)

In order to achieve the highest possible transfer rates and low latency times for memory modules, the data buses are terminated directly in the memory chip. On-die termination (ODT) or also on-chip termination (OCT) ensures appropriate line termination and I/O impedance matching for the read and write buses.

On-die termination has the advantage that fewer signal reflections occur on the memory bus at high clock rates, resulting in less interference and signal distortion. This technique eliminates the need for external termination resistors, reducing the number of components and the space required for them. The on-die termination technique is used in Double Date Rate Synchronous DRAMs( DDR-SDRAM) and in Reduced Latency DRAMs( RLDRAM).
