object model

  1. Object models describe specific objects that are characterized by their properties and can be accessed via their interfaces. Frequently it concerns software components, which are collected and administered in libraries and which are identifiable each for itself. The object models describe the characteristics for object-oriented programming and create the basis so that the individual software components can communicate with one another and be linked. The Component Object Model( COM) of Microsoft represents such an object model, further are the system Object Model (SOM) of IBM, the Document Object Model( DOM), the Java Document Object Model ( JDOM) as well as the object model for net applications the Distributed Component Object Model ( DCOM) and the Common Object Request Broker Architecture ( CORBA).
  2. In object-oriented programming, an object model is the set of object-oriented mechanisms that underlie an object-oriented language or design. Possible criteria for the characterization of an object model are abstract data types, data encapsulation, classes, class objects, metaclasses, inheritance, composition, typing, polymorphism, persistence and parallelism.
