normal response mode (NRM)

The Normal ResponseMode (NRM) is a bit-oriented, synchronous control method of the HDLC protocol that operates with a primary station, the master station, and one or more secondary stations

, the slave stations. In this HDLC mode of operation, a slave station can only transmit DCE blocks when requested to do so by the master station. If this constellation remains permanently, one speaks of the Unbalanced Normal Response Mode. Unbalanced mode is used in host networks. In contrast to NRM mode, Asynchronous Balanced Mode (ABM) is used with equal mutual communication.
