normal response mode (HDLC) (NRM)

The Normal Response Mode (NRM) is a bit-oriented, synchronous control method of the HDLC protocol that operates with a primary station, the master station, and one or more secondary stations, the slave stations. In this HDLC operating mode, a slave station can only transmit DCE blocks when requested to do so by the master station. If this constellation remains permanently, it is called Unbalanced Normal Response Mode. Unbalanced mode is used in host networks.

In contrast to NRM operation, Asynchronous Balanced Mode( ABM) is used with equal mutual communication.
