non-intrusive appliance load monitoring (NILM)

Non-Intrusive Appliance Load Monitoring (NILM) is a technique used by electric companies to determine the demand of residential customers.

With NILM monitoring, it is possible to determine the electricity demand of households in real time and use this information to calculate the demand for the feed-in. NILM monitoring takes place at the customer's point of entry by aggregating electricity consumption. Aggregation has the advantage of being more cost-effective because each household appliance does not have to be equipped with its own metering device, and because conclusions can be drawn about the appliances used via electricity consumption.

By analyzing the demand of residential customers, utilities have a high degree of planning certainty for electricity demand and the load on the power grids.
