night vision enhancement system (automotive) (NVES)

To increase traffic safety in the dark or in poor lighting conditions, night vision equipment (NVES) with infrared technology is used in automotive technology.

Near infrared ( NIR) and far in frared( FIR) infrared technologies are available for motor vehicles. NIR systems require active illumination of the vehicle apron with an infrared light in the wavelength range from 750 nm to 3,000 nm. The reflections of the infrared light are received by an infrared camera and converted into a realistic, monochromatic image, comparable to a road illuminated with high beam light.

The FIR system, on the other hand, detects thermal radiation from objects. The wavelength range detected is between 6,000 nm and 30,000 nm. The thermal images received by the infrared sensors are unusual in their presentation and therefore more difficult to interpret.
