newton (N)

Newton is the unit for force but also Apple's product name for one of the first personaldigital assistants( PDA).

  1. Newton (N) is the unit

for force The Newton is defined in the International System of Units( SI). One Newton is equal to the force required to accelerate the mass of one kilogram at one meter per second squared. The unit Newton is named after the English mathematician and scientist Sir Isaac Newton (1642 to 1727).
  2. The Newton designation for a handheld computing device

The Newton designation was used by Apple for the MessagePad. The device was offered between 1993 and 1998. The Newton MessagePad was conceptually the forerunner of later PDAs. It had organizer functions for address management and scheduling and functions for communication via fax and online services. The operating system "Newton OS"( NOS) was written entirely in C++ and optimized for low memory and processor usage. The Newton MessagePad had an infrared interface for data exchange between multiple devices and a serial and parallel interface to the printer. An optional messaging card could be used to receive and store pager messages, and a 9,600 baudfax modem allowed faxing and receiving online services.

The first Newton MessagePad came from. This version had an ARM processor 610 with 20 MHz and 640 KBRAM. The screen had a resolution of 336 x 320 dots. A touchscreen and adaptive handwriting recognition were supposed to recognize inputs with a stylus on the screen. However, the device annoyed its users with frequent crashes, non-functioning handwriting recognition and high power consumption. The Newton MessagePad 100 from October 1993 was supposed to compensate for these weaknesses and was also shipped in a German version. It was followed in March 1994 by the slimmer Newton MessagePad 110, whose stylus could be accommodated in the case. The display was protected by a protective flap for the first time. The Newton MessagePad 120 was introduced in October 1994 and had a memory of 2 MB. The operating system NOS 2.0 was implemented in the device for the first time. In the Newton MessagePad 130 from March 1996 the RAM was increased to 2.4 MB. The Newton MessagePad 2000 from March 1997 worked with a processor of the type STRONG ARM 110 with 167 MHz, had a LCD screen with 480 × 320 points resolution and 16 gray scales as well as two slots for PCMCIA cards. The Newton MessagePad 2100 from November 1997 was the last model of the series and was delivered with 8 MB RAM. For educational institutions, Apple presented the eMate 300 in March 1997 with the functionalities of the Newton, but a built-in keyboard and the form factor of a subnotebook.
