network management standards
In contrast to network management in homogeneous worlds, e.g. an SNA architecture, in larger LAN installations many components from different manufacturers come together and connect stations from different origins. The management of such heterogeneous networks is usually based on a management platform.
The most important standards for management platforms are CMIP/ CMIS from the OSI management model and SNMP from the TCP/ IP environment. CMIP/CMIS, like all OSI protocols, has a number of teething problems, mainly due to its complex implementation. For this reason, IEEE 802 has proposed a simplified variant for LANs calledCMOL (CMIP over LLC). Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), its further development SNMPv2 and CMOL are the important management standards for LANs.
