network intrusion protection system (NIPS)
A Network Intrusion Protection System (NIPS) is a network security system that protects networks from unauthorized access.
A NIPS system can consist of an intrusion detection system( IDS) and an intrusion prevention system( IPS).
A NIPS system can actively prevent attackers who gain unauthorized access to the network from doing so. This can be done through firewalls, ingress filters, virus scanners or other protection mechanisms. NIPS systems monitor network traffic continuously, detecting anomalies in traffic patterns and triggering alarms to which system administration must respond accordingly.
