network equipment building standard (NEBS)

Network Equipment Building Standard (NEBS) is a certification body that has developed a standard for the robustness of systems and equipment for extreme environmental influences. This includes mechanical loads such as high acceleration torques, surges due to lightning strikes, temperature stresses in the event of fire, etc.

The NEBS standard distinguishes between three load levels, with the third level ensuring the highest possible operational readiness. The load levels are designated with Level.

NEBS Level 1 is the lowest load level of the NEBS standard. It was developed by Bell Laboratories for the Regional Bell Operating Companies( RBOC) and addresses the safety requirements of employees and equipment. These requirements should be met by Local Exchange Carriers( LEC).

NEBS Level 2 is the intermediate load level. Like the lowest, it was developed for Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOC), but targets systems operations. This load level should be met by data centers.

NEBS Level 3 is the highest load level. Like the other two, it was developed for the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOC). It should be implemented by operating companies that operate carrier networks over wide area links. Systems meeting this level can operate under extreme environmental conditions.
