network based application recognition (NBAR)

Network Based Application Recognition (NBAR) is a technique to classify different applications. With the NBAR function, routers or switches can analyze IP packets with regard to their application, based on the IP port number or the Internet address( URL). The analyzed application can then be provided with the appropriate bandwidth and quality of service.

The NBAR process ensures that the available resources are used as effectively as possible and that crucial transmission parameters such as bandwidth, latency and the performance of the services offered are safeguarded and the intrusion of spam, malware or other malicious software is prevented.
