neighbour discovery protocol (NDP)

The Neighbour Discovery Protocol (ND) is used by the Internet Control Message Protocol ( ICMP) in the version ICMPv6 or the IPv6 protocol to quickly determine the network addresses. Furthermore, the Neighbour Discovery Protocol is used by routers and computers to determine routers connected to the network and to automatically detect the current network state and changes in the network. In addition to the detection of the network addresses, the Neighbour Discovery Protocol is used to determine the available routers, the link parameters, the next hop, a redirection under optimal conditions and stations that can no longer be reached.
